Maintaing Healthy Hair in the Winter

Maintaining Healthy Hair In The Winter

Although this winter has been pretty mild, the winter months can wreak havoc on your hair. Hair can be damaged by the cold blustery winds and especially from the heat indoors. Your hair relies on hydration to stay healthy and shiny looking. As these environmental stresses attack your hair cuticle hair looks dry, dehydrated and lifeless. Hair is harder to manage and style requiring hot tools to finish your style. This is a vicious circle as the hot tools will dry and stress hair even more. As always when I discuss proper maintenance for hair I tell clients to start with a proper haircut regimen. Every 6 weeks for a trim. Once your ends are split there is no turning back the hair must be cut to a healthy length. So get to your stylist on a regular basis...and add on a conditioning treatment. Your hair will thank you for it.  Read more for Tips from - Kevin Gatto

I have a few tricks up my sleeve I share with all my clients.

First:  When you wash your hair use lukewarm to cool water. Hot water can stress hair; cold water will shut and seal the cuticle layer of the hair leaving incredible shine to the hair!

Second:  Moisture! Moisture! Moisture! Use a shampoo and conditioner that is loaded with moisture. There are many products out there to choose from at various price points but the key is looking for products that will replenish your hair.  If your hair is feeling dryer than normal there are 2 options for you:

1.   Skip a day of shampooing. You don’t really need to wash your hair daily.  It’s a good thing to let your natural oils come through and hydrate your hair. This is why many women brush their hair every night before bed. Besides feeling good it is actually carrying natural oils down the hair shaft. I know it doesn’t sound good but it is one of the best things for your hair and it’s FREE. Use a dry shampoo on your non-wash days to help you restyle your hair.

2.   Use a lightweight leave-in conditioner.  This is usually done on towel dried damp hair as a foundation for other styling products and as a heat protectant for hot styling tools. Find one that is light enough or water based so it won’t weigh your hair down.

Third: Protect your hair with a silk scarf when your outdoors. Not only a fashionable accessory, the scarf will protect the delicate layers of the hair strand from cold winds and free radicals (the nasty environmental stresses that are constantly attacking the hair and skin.)

FourthNever leave your house with your hair wet. Now I am not sure if the old adage of getting a cold that way is true, but it is true that if it is really cold out and your hair is wet it can freeze causing breakage.  So protect and hydrate your hair so come spring you can show it off with pride!!
